An old shed is one of those jobs that sits on the list for years. The door stops closing, the roof starts to leak, and it slowly fills with things nobody wants. Then one day you decide the yard would be better off without it.
This is how shed removal works at the Jacksonville Beaches, what makes a coastal shed different, and what to sort out before anyone shows up with tools.
What salt air does to a shed
A shed a few blocks from the ocean ages faster than the same shed inland. That is not a sales line. It is just the coast.
- Metal sheds rust. The panels thin out, the screws corrode, and the doors come off their tracks. A badly rusted metal shed has sharp edges everywhere and is not something to pull apart in flip-flops.
- Wood sheds rot. Humidity, rain and sandy, wet ground work on the floor and the bottom of the walls first. Once the floor is soft, the whole structure starts to lean.
- Plastic and resin sheds get brittle. Years of Florida sun crack the panels, and the roof starts to sag.
- Storms finish the job. A shed that was already loose can lose a door or a roof panel in a strong blow, and then it is a hazard for the next one.
If your shed has reached the point where you do not want to stand inside it, that is usually the sign.
What shed removal includes
When we quote shed and fence removal, the price covers the whole job:
- Taking the structure apart on site
- Carrying it out, even when the only path is a narrow side yard or a gate
- Loading it on the truck
- Picking up the nails, screws and broken pieces that come loose
- Hauling it off, with metal and clean wood recycled where we can
The contents can go too. Most sheds hold a dead mower, rusted tools, old pool gear, paint cans and things that have not been touched in years. Tell us whether the shed is full or empty, because that changes the size of the job.
Hazardous items are the exception. We cannot load wet paint, gasoline, oil, pool chemicals or propane tanks. Check with your county's household hazardous waste program for those.
Floors, pads and anchors
What is under the shed is part of the conversation.
A wood floor usually comes out with the shed. Concrete blocks and pavers can go too. A poured concrete slab is a bigger job, so say at the estimate whether you want it gone or left in place. Many Florida sheds are also anchored or strapped down for wind, and those anchors need to be dealt with as part of the teardown.
For structures that are more than a simple shed, such as an old deck, a playset, a pergola or a small outbuilding, see our light demolition service.
One thing we do not do: electrical work. If the shed has power run to it, have a licensed electrician disconnect it before the teardown.
Access is most of the job
Getting a shed out of a yard is often harder than taking it apart.
In the older parts of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach, lots are tight. Side yards are narrow, fences sit close to the house, and the shed is often wedged into a back corner. That means the structure has to come apart in small sections and leave the way a wheelbarrow would.
In Ponte Vedra, Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee, the yards are bigger but there may be a guard gate, a screen enclosure, a paver patio or irrigation heads between the shed and the driveway. Tell us about all of it. We lay down protection over pavers and lawn where the carry path needs it.
A couple of photos help a lot: the shed, the gate, and the path to the driveway.
HOAs and permits: check first
This is the one part we cannot do for you.
Many communities in Ponte Vedra and Nocatee have HOA rules about outbuildings, including what can be put up, what can come down, and how long materials can sit in a driveway. Some cities and counties also have rules about removing or replacing structures. We are not going to state those rules here, because they differ by community and they change.
Before you book, check with your HOA and with your city or county building department. If you live in Jacksonville Beach, that means the City of Jacksonville Beach. If you plan to put a new shed in the same spot, ask about that at the same time.
What it costs
Every job starts at our $150 minimum. The price goes up with the size of the structure, what it is made of, whether it is full, and how hard it is to get out of the yard. A small metal shed in an open yard is at the easy end. A large wooden shed behind a fence with no gate access is at the other.
The estimate is free, it happens on site, and you get a flat number before we start. Nothing gets touched until you say go. More on how our pricing works.
While the truck is there
A shed rarely goes alone. Old fence sections, a pile of yard waste, leftover lumber and a rusted swing set can all go on the same truck. If the shed came down in a storm, read our guide to hurricane and storm debris cleanup.
